At this time of year, we all like to be snuggly, warm, and cozy. ‘Basement’ isn’t the first word that comes to mind when thinking about ‘snuggly, warm, and cozy.’ It can be a struggle to keep your basement living space truly livable 12 months out of the year.

Here are some tips to keeping your basement welcoming during the coldest months of the year:

  1. Rugs! If you have wall to wall carpeting, which is a great option when considering its noise-cancellation potential, consider adding area rugs or runners to increase the cozy factor. Your bare toes will thank you! If you have wood flooring or laminate, your feet will quickly communicate that there really is no option: go get some rugs!
  2. Fireplace! Front and center, please. While some models might be cost prohibitive, the quality of portable space heaters (made to look like real fireplaces) is rising. If a year round fireplace is out of the question, perhaps rearranging furniture and purchasing an aesthetically pleasing space heater is an option.
  3. Furniture and Accessories! It might be time to invigorate that second-hand couch that you’ve banned to the basement. A set of new pillows with a cozy fabric choice could do the trick. A few faux-fur throws to snuggle under adds a layer of sophistication to any sofa. Strategically placing ottomans or small stools to help keep your feet off of the cold floor is recommended.

If your basement is currently a crypt of cold concrete, boxes of untouched decorations, baseball cards, and that box of glass candle votives from that retirement party you threw last spring…. It’s time to dream big and think of all the potential that misused space has!

You don’t have to bust your budget in order to up your basement cozy-snuggle factor.
